Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Begin and end with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
- In a separate bowl, mix together powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and heavy cream until smooth and creamy to make the frosting.
- Once the cakes are completely cool, frost the top of one cake layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
- Decorate with sprinkles and graduation decorations as desired.
